The method Wilson uses includes first heating the gum with a blow torch then coating the gum with three layers of acrylic enamel, he then covers it with a clear lacquer finish. It can take up to three days to produce one picture. Subject matters vary greatly and can be requested.
Wilson has been arrested for his work, while doing some art in Trafalgar Square in 2005, however he has defended his work by saying “Technically, it is not criminal damage, because you are painting the gum, not the pavement”.
Two short documentary films have also been made about Wilson, Ben Wilson, The Chewing Gum Man and In My Blood.
