Coffee Art by Hong Yi

Malaysian Artist-Architect Hong Yi (29), aka Red, is widely recognized as the artist who ‘loves to paint, but not with a paintbrush’. Red created portraits using nothing but Nescafe coffee stains on the bottom of a mug.

She is also ‘painting’ portraits of iconic Chinese figures, using local everyday materials like a basketball, seeds, candles or even socks as her medium.

Her grandparents left Shanghai in the ’60s and after she returned to the Middle Kingdom two generations later she was blown away by the city. This experience inspired her to start her project, picturing local icons such as Ai Weiwei, Yao Ming or Jay Chou. Red currently runs her own design studio and lives and works between Shanghai and Malaysia.
